Infinitum: The Infinity Mirror Table

A Beautiful Backdrop for Your Belongings

Infinitum is an arduino-powered table that turns on when items are placed on it, and which turns off when they are removed. This unique design by Louise-Anne van 't Riet is perfect for those who never tidy up, but leave their belongings everywhere. With Infinitum, you can have a beautiful backdrop for your objects and the illusion of an infinitely deep hole in the floor.

Infinitum is not just an ordinary table. It is a piece of art that combines functionality and innovation. The table is made up of a set of plexiglass mirrors, carefully arranged so that the LEDs between them reflect an image back onto the fully reflective mirror. When objects are placed on the table, the piezo sensor switch is activated, and the table lights up, creating a mesmerizing display.

What sets Infinitum apart is its ability to encourage tidiness. The table's lights will only switch off once there is nothing left on it. This feature motivates users to clean up after themselves, ensuring a clutter-free living space.

The construction of the table is a testament to the designer's attention to detail. The tabletop is created using a double-lipped ring made of plexiglass mirrors. The base of the table consists of wood circles and PLY wood slats, providing a sturdy structure to support the tabletop. The one-way plexiglass mirror reflects the LEDs into a two-sided plexiglass mirror, creating a series of smaller and smaller reflections that appear to recede into an infinite distance.

Infinitum is not just a functional piece of furniture; it is also a technological marvel. The table is powered by an Arduino board, hidden within the table and accessible through a hole. The piezo sensor switch, connected to the Arduino board, detects vibrations caused by objects being placed on the table, triggering the LED lights. This seamless integration of technology and design adds to the overall appeal of Infinitum.

The creation of Infinitum was not without its challenges. The coding required for the table's functionality proved to be the most difficult part of the project. However, the designer's perseverance and dedication paid off, resulting in a stunning and innovative design.

Infinitum was created in New York City over a span of five weeks. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in every aspect of the design. It is no wonder that Infinitum was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This prestigious accolade recognizes the exceptional expertise and innovation demonstrated by this remarkable piece of furniture.

Infinitum is not just a table; it is a statement piece that combines art, technology, and functionality. With its mesmerizing display and ability to encourage tidiness, Infinitum is a must-have for those who appreciate unique and innovative designs.
